Matsuyama Ken solo exhibition "creature card" 2007.12.6-12.28 opening party/12.8(sat)pm6:00-8:30

CREATURE CARD

In a child's drawings, before the child has learned the rules of proportion and realism, the things in which they are interested in are drawn with greater size.  Their selves, families, and houses -- each size is drawn differently from the real proportion.  I still remember when I was a kindergartener that I had drawn a person and a stag beetle as the same size, standing side by side holding hands.

As a schoolchild, I was collecting some trading cards from the show "Masked Rider."  I really enjoyed slowly collecting cards of the show's monsters.  I have made a series of paintings where people in stuffed-animal suits, insects, and girls pose together just like the portaits on the Masked Rider cards.  This series has become "Creature Card."
